I guess I should start being more interesting, huh?

Y’know, it occurs to me that your poll results are going to be strongly skewed toward people who like taking tests & comparing the results. Once you think you have a handle on your theory, you’re going to have to find a way to re-test against a much larger random sample.

You need to test the assumptions you make from this preliminary study by starting with an individual’s follower count and attempting to predict their Myer-Briggs type.

@sandy not really. I’ve found that the length of time you are on Twitter doesn’t change how many people you are comfortable following and having follow you. That’s more an aspect of personality I believe.

@will actually this survey is to answer a specific theory I am keeping under my hat to make sure the answers are straightforward. I’ll reveal it in the post.

Then, based on how that goes, I have a part two and a part three survey in mind to carry the data out further, both beyond twitter to other networks and into issues like demographics.

This is all very informal right now, but I’m hoping it leads to some very useful data I can share with everyone.

The only challenge with this is of course I have used other profiling tools that I feel are more consistent and accurate than Myers Briggs / Disc. I wonder if we did the Strengths Finder assessment from Marcus Buckingham if it would tell us more.

Also what about Social Intelligence / Emotional Intelligence levels? You would think that those that don’t understand social norms / ettiquette may do worse? Conversely they may also attract a bunch of people with the same lack of social intelligence?

Regarding the Dunbar theory I think we also have to realize that people define relationships differently. I’m not sure about the 150 number, especially with so many technology tools at our disposal to manage multiple relationships.

I think it might be interesting to look at the ratios between following/followers rather than the actual numbers themselves – as you’ll probably have problems controlling for time spent on Twitter. Finding a way to measure the way in which people use Twitter in relation to their personality type might also be interesting, though is obviously harder to quantify.

I didn’t use your online survey .. that’s from getting the test directly from MB – from a nonprofit management online leadership institute that I was the facilitator for about 15 years ago. I should test myself again because your type can change as you go through different life changes.

I wrote a paper about 15 years ago using the Myers Briggs and Gardner’s Intelligence theory as the basis for online community participation and designing online technical support programs. I can’t find it — I didn’t have a large sample, I administered tests to sample of 100 online participants and conducted depth interviews. There were definitely some patterns as to who lurks who doesn’t, who asks for help, how the help needs to strutured, and implications for online moderators. I’ll be curious to see what you come up with.
