Personal Brand, Twitter Handles, @geechee_girl Backstory

By now you know I changed my Twitter handle from @geechee_girl to @leslie. This has sparked a storm of reactions, with three being the most common. I thought I’d make a quick video to answer the three most asked questions: 1) How will this affect your “personal brand”? 2) Can you help us change our Twitter handle, too? and 3) What’s the story behind @geechee_girl, anyway? (I assure you, the story is not worth the amount of interest it receives, but I will tell you anyway).

Update Feb 2010: For those who think I’m pulling their leg on the “no special way” to get your handle “use the support ticket system”, here is @kim’s take on it, giving you the same advice :)

Note: By the way – Utterli as a service is having problems. If I can ever figure out how to download the videos I made, I will do that so I can just upload them here and they won’t keep disappearing willy nilly. This one is an Utterli video that comes and goes. I’ve been making future videos in Viddler. It’s more stable. however, check back for this one if you haven’t seen it yet, it seems to appear off and on.

    Hello @leslie, You know at first I did not like nor understand your choice of “geechee_girl”; however, like most of your followers came to love it and you! The change was a surprise, for sure, but I thought it totally appropriate that it happen. I thought for much of the reasons you talked about and the fact is was a ''fun” handle, but this is your profession (you remind me of that a lot, ;) , don't you?) and @leslie is YOU and I for one am pleased to see the change. Although, “geechee_girl” holds a fond spot in my heart. The best, BTW, what is 'viddler'? Don't stop utterli, please? Hugs, TheMom

    I rarely watch videos on line..(go figure that one) …but I just had to hear your “story” …I love geechee_girl…it showed your spirit!!

    Mom – Viddler is a more reliable video service I'm thinking of using to replace Utterli for these video posts, because Utterli has been down a lot lately.

    Reiko – I am laughing that the video queen doesn't watch videos online, but I get it – I get too busy to watch anything longer than a few minutes myself.

    It seems having the old name retired would be crucial, for usability. If someone is hitting you up from one of the desktop apps, and has your old name in auto-fill, the new user will get the Tweet, right. Bad for everyone.

    Also, you made a really good point about how you're the brand and now your user name is actually more relevant, and will actually strengthen the brand.
